The Pout-Pout Fish’ Swims Onto the Big Screen—Watch the Adorable Trailer
The Pout Pout Fish has been helping kids work through life’s challenges since the first book was released in 2008. In the following years, the series became a New York Times bestseller, and more than 42 Pout Pout Fish books have been published.
Now our favorite scowling friend is getting his own movie, too. And Parents is getting an exclusive first look at the trailer.
What Is 'The Pout Pout Fish' Movie About?
The movie stars Nick Offerman as Mr. Fish, who, with a permanent frown stuck on his face, spreads the “weary drearies” along the coral reef community where he lives. The introverted fish doesn’t have many friends—that is, until he meets Pip.
Pip is the opposite of Mr. Fish: this energetic sea dragon is cheerful and outgoing. They don’t seem like a pair that are likely to team up, until his home—a sunken ship—is destroyed. That prompts him to reconsider everything he’s thought he enjoyed about his isolated life.
Pip is also looking for a new home, and it better be a big one because she has 300 brothers and sisters. Pip convinces Mr. Fish that the pair should find Shimmer, a legendary fish who grants wishes—and just might be able to restore their homes.
Motivated to find new, more hospitable homes, Mr. Fish and Pip decide to embark on an epic quest to find the magical fish. Along the way, they meet jellyfish, unfriendly sharks, and a starfish.
The trailer gives viewers a hint of the adventure to come—and leaves us wondering if Pip and Mr. Fish find new homes, or if he’ll finally decide to spread happiness, instead of the “weary drearies.”
Tackling Difficult Topics For Kids
Like the Pout Pout Fish books—which have confronted the complex topics that keep kids up at night, from how to deal with a bully to conquering classroom jitters—this movie isn’t just about entertaining kids: It also might inspire kids to look for friends where they least expect them, to find their courage, and to embrace an adventure of their own.
The Pout Pout Fish will be released in theaters on March 20, 2026. Until then, revisit the books with your kids for a reminder of why we fell in love with this grumpy guy in the first place.
