“Charlie the Wonderdog,” a children’s animated film starring Owen Wilson, has been acquired by Viva Kids and will be released in theaters on Jan. 16.
The animated film follows Charlie (voiced by Wilson), a beloved family dog who was mysteriously abducted by aliens and receives superpowers that transform him into the superhero, Charlie the Wonderdog. The film explores themes of friendship, loyalty, resilience, power and responsibility.
“‘Charlie the Wonderdog’” is everything we look for in a family film: heart, humor, and a universal message about courage and connection,” Victor Elizalde, CEO of Viva Kids, said in a statement.
He continued, “Icon Creative has created something both uplifting and cinematic, and Owen Wilson brings an incredible warmth and wit to Charlie that audiences will instantly fall in love with. We’re thrilled to bring this film to theaters and can’t wait for families to meet their new favorite superhero dog.”
Shea Wageman directed and co-wrote the script with Steve Ball. Wageman also produced the film with Carson Loveday, and the pair also executive-produced alongside Michael Balfry and Bahar Dehghanian. The original score is by Petteri Saino with music by Bryan Adams.
Wageman, ICON Creative CEO, said about the acquisition: “We’re extremely excited to have Viva releasing Charlie in the U.S. Their marketing innovations, enthusiasm and wide reach is exactly what ‘Charlie’ needs to reach family audiences in the theater and eventually at home. We’re excited for Viva to bring this film to theatres on January 16th.”
The deal was negotiated by Victor Elizalde for Viva Pictures and Shea Wageman & Carson Loveday for ICON Creative.
